Do Our Names Define Us?

In the classic Shakespeare play, Juliet asks the question, “What’s in a name?” then seems to answer herself by suggesting that no matter our labels, we simply are who we are. Though some believe that our names not only influence our personalities but that they ultimately play a very intricate part in defining our lives and our works. The Romans used the expression, nomen est omen, which means, “name is destiny.” Using that mindset, our founders Seaborn and Seaborn (“Wally”) Bell Jr’s first names translate to, “born at sea.” If there’s any truth to our names defining us, it would seem rather fitting that our founders became boat builders.

From Earth to Sea

The Bell’s never intended to build boats, but instead were blueberry farmers with a passion for fishing and the outdoors. As with most farmers, the need to lower costs and improve margins were always a constant struggle. Fueled by necessity and experimentation with composite materials, the pair created their own sub-surface irrigation products. With a new found experience using fiberglass, the idea to build a boat became more than just conversation. One boat leading to the next, passion would become a life’s work and the Sundance brand of skiffs was born.

Sundance Boats

During those humble beginnings, Sundance exclusively built basic, no frills flat bottom boats (skiffs) with the working class fishing enthusiast in mind. Circa 1995, Sundance boats would become available to the public through a first dealer in Daytona, Florida. Almost fourteen years and thousands of boats later, the changing needs of the customer would advance production to a first line of v-hull bay boats. This advancement would lead the way to a new era for the company raising the question, “what should we call the new brand?”

Sea Born Boats

In 2012, the Sea Born brand would launch and offer an up-fitted version of the original Sundance B Series with v-hulls. That same year, Sea Born would release the NX Series offering boaters superior flexibility to cruise offshore and back bays, marking one of the industries first, true hybrid bay boats. Since then, thousands of Sea Born boats have been produced through an ever increasing network of dealers.
